Description

A row of three houses located on Middle Street, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century. The houses are constructed with painted roughcast over a cob or rubble stone base, and have slate roofs with brick stacks at the gable ends. A party wall exists between the houses, and the rear right wing of number 7 is of particular note. Numbers 3 and 5 are of a two-unit central-entry plan, while number 7 is a single unit with a rear wing. The houses are three stories high, with two and one-window ranges. The windows are largely 19th and 20th century two-light casements, diminishing in size towards the eaves, featuring small panes on the ground floor. 20th-century doors are present. The rear of number 7 features a lateral stack. The interior of number 3 has been altered, but the second-floor roof structure retains four bays with trenched purlins. According to local history, this block of houses was converted into a workhouse in 1820.
