Description

Glebe Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th to 18th centuries and early 19th century. The building features a roughcast facade over cob on the front and left gable end, with some enlargement in random rubble visible on the rear elevation and on the service wing, which has brick dressings. The roof is slate, with a lower wing independently roofed in plain tiles, and there are brick stacks rising from below the gable ends and the centre of the service wing, indicating the height of the earlier cob farmhouse core.

The plan has the gable end facing the road and consists of two cells with a wide through passage, a lateral corridor, an enlarged outshot, and a service wing to the right. The farmhouse is two storeys high with three bays on the left and two on the right. The early 19th-century windows on the left are 3-light leaded iron casements, while the later 19th-century window on the right is a 3-light casement under a brick relieving arch. One window opening has been bricked up, and there are 3 and 4-light casements from the 19th and 20th centuries on the ground floor. The entrance is located between the first and second bays on the left and features a 6-panelled door.

On the ground floor left, a small unglazed 2-light stair light was discovered when plaster was removed during renovations. The long rear elevation, which backs onto the road, is mostly unlit except for the outshot. The first floor has two early 19th-century 3-light leaded iron casements under segmental relieving arches, and the ground floor has one modified 5-light casement under a flat lintel to the left of a plank door. The interior has not been seen. The evolution of this cob farmhouse is noted to share similarities with Rowford House.
