Description

Rowford House is a farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations and enlargement in 1787 and 1913, and a mid-19th century extension. The walls are rendered and grooved to resemble ashlar, set over a cob and rubble core, with a random red sandstone rubble gable end. The roof is slate, with a pantiled kitchen wing and 20th-century yellow brick stacks at the gable ends and in the centre of the kitchen wing. The original plan was a three-cell layout with a cross passage, which was later altered to a two-cell and hall plan, and then enlarged by two bays on the right side, with a single-storey kitchen wing added to the left. The outshot was raised to two storeys in the early 20th century.

The house has two storeys and originally seven bays, though the first-floor windows were replaced in the early 20th century with 12-pane sashes. The ground floor holds 16-pane sash windows flanking the entrance, with a raking buttress to the right. Two two-light casements are located in the end bays, and a half-glazed double door is positioned to the left of the buttress. A three-bay trelliswork wooden verandah with an asbestos slate and corrugated plastic roof extends to the left. A single-storey kitchen wing is located on the left side, with a two-light casement and a plank door, alongside a later set-back addition.

Two date stones can be found on the left gable end: “IC 1787” and “EM(usgrave), 1913”. The 1913 alterations are attributed to damage caused by a fire. The overall evolution of the house shares characteristics with Glebe Farmhouse.
