Description

The Old Rectory is a building that was originally a rectory and is now divided into three dwellings. It dates from around 1861 and is possibly designed by Edward Jeboult. The structure features local random rubble with Bath stone dressings, a patterned clay tile roof, decorative ridge tiles, and coped verges with kneelers on the gable ends of the cross wings. There are large stacks on the roof ridge to the left and center, each with four caps, and an external stepped stack on the left return.

The building has an L-plan and is one and a half storeys tall, with a layout of 1:3:1 bays. It includes stone mullioned windows with pointed arch heads, three-light windows in the gable ends below semi-circular relieving arches, and irregularly placed two-light gabled dormers in the center. The cross wings feature four-light mullioned and transomed windows below pointed relieving arches.

A projecting conservatory, which is contemporary with the building, has a dentil-moulded pedimented end and a frieze of wooden columns with recessed panels. It also includes pivotal windows with marginal glazing bars and is accessed from the left return via a flight of steps. There is a glazed partition on the right with a projecting flat-roofed canted bay, along with three and two-light mullioned and transomed windows. A gabled porch abuts the crossing and features a moulded pointed arch opening, similar to the inner doorway, which has an original door with decorative hinges. The long gabled left return is also notable. The interior has not been seen, but the building is described as a typical mid-Victorian rectory that is remarkably unaltered.
