Description
Montacute Cottage is a semi-detached house dating from around 1500 and later. It is built from cut and squared Ham stone with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof over stone slate base courses, featuring stepped coped gables and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays.
In the first bay, there are chamfered mullioned windows with three lights; the upper window is plain, while the lower window is set in a chamfered recess and has a 20th-century label above it, with square-headed lights. The second bay features a three-light 16th-century traceried window with trefoil cusped, slightly ogee heads set in a flat-arched wave-mould recess. The third bay has a plain-chamfered two-light window in a chamfered recess. The lower windows in the second and third bays are chamfer-mullioned windows with three and two lights, respectively, also in flat-arched wave-mould recesses, with ogee-arched lights and corresponding spandrils. All windows are rectangular leaded with some iron-framed opening lights.
Between the first and second bays, there is a moulded four-centre arched doorway without a label, which contains a 20th-century boarded door. The interior has not been seen but is said to have been altered; it may have originally featured an open hall.
