Description
The Chantry is a semi-detached house located in Montacute, likely built in the 17th century but incorporating some 16th-century elements. It is constructed from coursed rubble of Ham stone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof with stone slate base courses, topped by stepped coped gables and stone chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and a two-bay west elevation.
The windows are hollow-chamfered mullioned types set in chamfered recesses, with a three-light window on the lower floor and a two-light window above. All windows have flat heads, except for the upper bay one, which has four-centre arched lights. A substantial chimney stack is located at the south-west corner of the house.
On the south gable, there is a two-storey angled bay window featuring one lower light and three upper lights, all hollow-chamfered mullioned in chamfered recesses. The lower window has flat heads, while the upper has four-centre arched lights with incised spandrels beneath a stepped hipped stone roof. Above the lower window, there are two string moulds, and a carved panel spans the full width of the bay, depicting two figures carrying a shield with the letters R.S, which refers to the last prior of Montacute from 1532 to 1539. There is also a triangular-arched doorway on the right without a label, leading to a plain boarded door. The property has various extensions to the east, but the interior has not been seen.
