Description
The south-west gateway to Montacute House is an entrance gateway, likely built in the 19th century. It features walls and piers made of ham stone ashlar, along with a wrought-iron gate. The wing walls are approximately 2.5 meters high and have thin copings, curving back in a quarter-circle to the central gateway. This gateway is about 3 meters wide and has square piers with a plinth, a pulvinated frieze, and flat moulded cornice-caps. The pair of wrought-iron gates includes scroll-braced necked spearpoints on the middle and top rails, with ogee braces.
This gateway is an important part of the setting for Montacute House and contributes significantly to the streetscape at a prominent location in the village. It was likely constructed during the reorganization of the grounds that took place between 1845 and 1852.
