MONTACUTE CP THE BOROUGH (north side) South-west gateway to Montacute House

GV II Entrance gateway. Probably C19. Ham stone ashlar walls and piers; wrought-iron gate. Wing walls about 2.5m high, with thin copings, having quarter-circle curves back to central gateway, which has square piers with plinth, pulvinated frieze and flat moulded cornice-caps; gateway about 3m wide, with pair of wrought-iron gates having scroll-braced necked spearpoints to middle and top rails, with ogee braces.

An important element in the setting of Montacute House (q.v), as well as in the streetscene at a prominent point in the heart of the village. Probably erected during the re-organisation of the grounds which was carried out between 1845 and 1852.
