Description
No. 27 The Borough is a corner house currently used as tea rooms, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of Ham stone that is cut and squared, with ashlar dressings. The building features a double Roman clay tile roof between stepped coped gables, which have gabletted finials, and brick chimney stacks. It has two storeys with an attic and is arranged in a 2 bays by 2 bays configuration, with the east gable facing The Borough.
The gable includes hollow-chamfered mullioned windows set in chamfered recesses, with a 3-light window in the upper bay 2 and a single-light window in the attic bay 2, both adorned with labels. There is a later 2-light window with a slim label in the upper bay 1, and a stable-type door under an extended label in the lower bay 1, accompanied by a footscraper to the right. The lower bay 2 features a 3-light 20th-century shop window beneath a keystoned false lintel.
On the return elevation to Middle Street, there is a 3-light mullioned window with a label in the lower bay 1, and above it, a 20th-century 2-light small-pane casement. The lower bay 2 has a casement window that has been inserted into a former door, with a 3-light leaded casement of an early pattern above it. Between the bays, there is a 20th-century door set in a recess with a label. The north-east corner of the building is chamfered and features a corbel at the first-floor level. The interior has not been seen.
