Description

This is a barn located approximately 15 metres east of the house at Birka Carr, dating from the mid 17th century and altered in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared gritstone with a stone slate roof. The barn is single storey and consists of five bays with a partial aisle. On the south side, there are large quoins, and the four-bay aisle projection on the right features a chamfered, quoined doorway at each end. The first bay, which is set back, has a matching doorway to the left and a small rectangular opening beneath the eaves. The gable ends have shaped kneelers and chamfered copings.

At the rear, to the right of centre, there is an inserted mid-19th century segmentally-arched waggon entrance, and the wall has rows of projecting throughstones with three slit vents on the left. Inside, the first bay contains cow stalls beneath a loft floor of a later date, while bay two has a wooden threshing floor and bays three to five are paved with stone. The aisle arcade features three posts and an arcade plate that supports original principal-rafter trusses with raking struts. This barn is a well-preserved example of its type.
