Description

West Gowbusk Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, which was refenestrated and extended in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and consists of two bays, with an additional two-storey bay added to the right. The right bay has a board door set in a plain stone surround, and to the right of this door are 4-pane sash windows with projecting sills and large lintels on both the ground and first floors. The earlier two-bay section likely has a blocked doorway to the right and features recessed-chamfered mullion windows to the left, with the leftmost window having four lights with the mullions removed. On the first floor, there are two casement windows with wooden lintels. The house has end stacks and a ridge stack located above the join between the 17th-century house and the added bay.

Inside, the left room has horizontal timbers that are concealed beneath wallpaper at the ceiling level on the front, rear, and partition walls. The central room contains a large fireplace, a spine beam, and a straight flight of stairs against the rear wall. The house likely originally had a two-cell end-lobby-entrance plan, and the timbers in the left ground-floor room may be remnants of an earlier timber-framed structure.
