Description
Lacon Cross is a Grade II listed medieval monument located in Sawley on the north side of Green Lane. It is likely associated with the monks of Fountains Abbey. The cross is made of gritstone and features a plinth composed of flat stones, forming a base that is approximately 1.5 metres square and 20 centimetres high. At the center of the plinth is a socket stone, which measures about 60 centimetres square and 40 centimetres high, with a hollowed top designed to hold the cross shaft. The shaft itself is square in section and has roll mouldings at the corners, surviving to an approximate height of 1 metre. This cross likely served as a route marker for travelers crossing Butterton Bridge from Warsill and the south to Fountains Abbey.
