Description
Hungate Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century. It is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble and has a graduated stone slate roof. The building features a two-storey, two-bay main range with a lower bay to the left and a single-storey, two-bay addition to the right. The central entrance is a 20th-century glazed door, and there is a blocked entrance to the far right, indicating that the original layout may have included an end lobby-entry plan.
On the ground floor, there are three- and four-light recessed-chamfered mullioned windows to the left and center, while the first floor has an enlarged three-light recessed-chamfered mullion window to the left of center and another three-light window to the right of center. The building features gable copings and end stacks. Although the interior was not inspected during the resurvey, it is reported to contain a cruck truss and a timber mantle beam, which may support a firehood. This cottage is a rare example of early timber construction.
