Description
Brace Croft Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, constructed from coursed gritstone rubble with a graduated stone slate roof. The building has two storeys and two bays, featuring an end-lobby entry plan. There is a board door to the right, set in an alternate quoined surround, with a lintel that has a shallow four-centred arch. To the left, there are two 2-light recessed-chamfered mullion windows with hoodmoulds, and on the first floor, there are two similar windows without hoodmoulds. The jamb stones of all the windows have an additional lower piece, suggesting that the windows have been made deeper. The left side has a shaped kneeler and gable coping, along with end stacks.
At the rear, there is a projecting semicircular staircase bay in the centre, which has a blocked single-light window. There is also a single-light fire window on the far left and an inserted window on the right. Inside, the original main fireplace opposite the door is now partly blocked. The ceiling beams have scarfed joints, indicating an original timber-framed firehood, and there are chamfered ceiling beams and joists with run-out stops. A stone spiral stair is present as well. Additional flanking bays from the mid to late 19th century are not of special interest.
