Description
Lane Head Farmhouse and Barn consists of two buildings that were originally houses, dating from the early to mid 17th century, with some additions and alterations made in the mid 19th century. The structures are built from coursed gritstone rubble and feature graduated stone slate roofs, with quoins visible on the corners.
The 17th-century house is two stories high and has three bays, with a through passage. At the left (west) end, there is a two-story, two-bay house from the 19th century that is built at right angles to the earlier structure. The south front of the 17th-century house has a central blocked doorway that features a deeply-chamfered quoined surround and an unusual triangular-shaped lintel, with the lower edge shaped into a shallow four-centred arch. There are remains of recessed-chamfered mullioned windows on the ground floor, with one and three lights to the right and two or more lights to the left. The first floor has two loading doors in plain surrounds. At the rear, there is a central doorway that is also blocked, mirroring the front.
The left return shows that the west gable end of the house has been destroyed, and the roof line has been altered where the later house connects to it. Inside, a door lintel with a similar chamfer to the entrance door is visible through the blocked doorway.
The 19th-century house has an east front featuring a central six-panel door in a narrow plain surround with tie stones. It includes four-pane sash windows in plain surrounds with projecting sills throughout. The left side has a shaped kneeler and gable coping, with end stacks. The roof of the 19th-century house continues to the right, covering the west gable end of the earlier house. At the time of the resurvey, the property was derelict.
