Description

This is an aisled barn located to the west of Crag House, dating from the 16th century with alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. Originally built as a fully timber-framed structure in the 16th century, it was encased in stone and had its outer walls rebuilt in the 17th century. Later modifications include the roof being clad in corrugated asbestos in the 20th century. The barn now consists of five bays, featuring a full-length aisle on the north side and a three-bay aisle on the south side, with quoins present.

On the south side, there is a quoined cart entrance in bay four, which has been raised to eaves height. To the left of the aisle, there is a fine blocked 17th-century byre door with chamfered quoined jambs, along with an inserted doorway to the right. The east gable has three tiers of slit vents positioned high up, with possibly more vents obscured by a 20th-century brick lean-to addition.

Inside, the barn features four trusses made up of full-height posts, some of which have bases encased in concrete. The interior includes tie-beams, one king-post, one V-strut, principal rafters, aisle plates, and straight braces. The south aisle plate extends over the cart entrance. The aisle ties connect to the remains of the aisle plate on the north side, and three timber posts along with stone footings of the northern outside wall are visible.
