Description
The retaining walls or railway cutting extend southwards from the south portal of Bramhope tunnel, part of the Leeds to Thirsk Railway, built between 1845 and 1849 under the engineering of Thomas Grainger. Constructed from rock-faced sandstone, the walls follow a slightly curved line for approximately 300 metres south from the portal. The walls feature slightly-projecting piers at regular intervals and have a concave batter with squared coping. This structure is included for its group value.
