Description

OXTON OXTON HALL ESTATE SE 44 SE 3/48 Oxton Hall 3.2.67 - II Small country house. Early C18 core with later additions and alterations including extensive early C19 rebuilding and restorations of c1985. Reddish-brown brick with Tadcaster limestone facade, Welsh slate roof. Central-entrance hall plan. 2 storeys, 7 bays with 3-bay central breakforward. Plinth. Central single-storey, tetrastyle Greek Doric portico, frieze with triglyphs, modillion cornice and low parapet. Part- glazed double-doors with overlight with vertical glazing bars. To either side are tall 8-pane sashes with aprons. Otherwise 12-pane sashes throughout, those to ground floor with aprons, those to first floor with sills. Between windows to first floor of central breakforward are round- headed niches. Moulded cornice. Low parapet to sides and pediment to centre. Hipped roof. Ridge stacks. Garden front: ironwork veranda to ground floor has fluted columns and ornamental frieze. To rear, several openings have flat arches of red rubbed brick with ashlar keystones and red brick quoined jambs. To stable yard side a round-arched window with Gothick glazing to head. Carriage arch with later infil. Interior: extensively remodelled in early C19 with many good features including cantilevered staircase with wrought-iron lattice-work balustrade and wreathed handrail. Service staircase has rod-on-vase balusters. Panelled entrance hall has ornate door-cases with friezes decorated with mythological beasts. Cornice with ornamental guttae. Mainly 6-fielded-panel doors throughout. Further panelled rooms to either side with marble fireplaces. Other features include fireplaces and ornate shutters.
