Description
Woodhill is a small country house dating from the early and mid-18th century, with extensions added in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with slate hipped roofs, featuring a triglyph frieze, moulded eaves cornice, and ridge and end stacks. The main rectangular block has a square projection to the north-east corner, and later 19th and 20th century service ranges to the rear.
The east front has an asymmetrical eight-bay design. The right-hand four bays feature three tiers of glazing-bar sash windows, while the left-hand side has two tiers of larger sash windows, all with gauged heads. The main entrance is in the fourth bay from the right, consisting of six-panel double doors with a decorative radial fanlight, situated under a moulded entablature supported by four decorated console brackets. The three-bay projecting range to the right has glazing-bar sashes with horns, and a hip-roofed dormer in the roof slope.
Inside, a dog-leg wooden staircase rises to the attic, with elegant turned, decorated balusters and a moulded handrail. Ground-floor rooms are characterised by carved wooden cornices and decorative plasterwork ceilings; a notable feature is the increased height of the rooms on the left side of the house. Several wooden fireplaces with carved dense foliage decoration are also present. It is recorded that a portico formerly existed over the main entrance door.
