Description
The Gibraltar Inn is a late 17th-century farmhouse, now operating as an inn, located in the rural parish of Treflach Wood near Oswestry. Constructed of painted uncoursed limestone rubble with a graded slate roof, the building follows a longhouse plan, incorporating a former cowhouse and hayloft at the left end. A short, steep-pitched range was added to the right in the 19th century. The two-storey structure features two 19th-century horizontal sliding sash windows (one converted to a fixed light) and one 16-paned fixed window on the ground floor, along with 19th-century casements below the eaves. Entrances are through late 20th-century lean-to porches, and a prominent 19th-century brick ridge stack is visible. A late 20th-century casement window has been inserted into the front of the former cowhouse. Inside, the two main ground-floor rooms retain chamfered cross beams with straight-cut stops. A large inglenook fireplace, with a partly re-built late 20th-century chamfered wooden lintel, is also present. The former cowhouse has heavy joists. It is believed to have been an inn since the late 18th century.
