Description

Llwyn-y-mapsis Farmhouse is a derelict farmhouse dating from 1726, as indicated by a datestone on the left gable end, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick in random bond on a stepped plinth, topped with a slate roof that features a shaped gable on the left, altered in the 19th century, and raised verges on the right. It has one storey and an attic, with a continuous brick floor band along the front and gable end. There are original segmental-headed window openings, although the casements are now missing. These openings include one to the left and one to the right of a door located to the left of center, which is sheltered by a flat-roofed trellised porch. To the right of a blocked segmental-headed doorway, there is a similar window. The roof features a roughly central gabled eaves dormer and a prominent axial red brick ridge stack to the right of center, along with a 19th-century red brick end stack on the left. At the rear, there is a full-length brick outshut that is in a ruinous condition as of the last survey in July 1985.

Inside, the farmhouse has a chamfered spine beam with ogee stops and heavy joists in the center and left ground-floor rooms, while the right ground-floor room has a plain chamfered beam and joists. There are large inglenook fireplaces with chamfered wooden lintels and 19th-century cast-iron ranges beneath the ridge stack. An oak winder staircase is located to the right of the fireplace in the center room, and there is a timber-framed cross wall between the center and left rooms. The ground floor features plank and muntin doors with pointed strap hinges, found on the right gable end and in the right-hand bedroom. The single-purlin roof, which spans three bays, has trusses that were obscured by plaster at the time of the last survey.
