Description
The gate piers, railings, and boundary wall located to the north of Sweeney Hall date from probably the late 18th century. The gate piers are made of limestone ashlar and have a square section with a moulded plinth and capping, panelled sides, and pointed finials. The wrought-iron railings sit on low stone walls, which feature decorated pointed finials and standards. These railings lead south to a ha-ha and north to a boundary wall that has a datestone from 1718, although it was partly rebuilt around 1860. The boundary wall is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble and includes a 19th-century stepped gabled ashlar coping with an arched entrance on the north side. This structure encloses a roughly oval-shaped area with several angled breaks and returns, connecting to an outbuilding in the courtyard behind Sweeney Hall. The datestone "B/TS/1718" is located at the south-east corner.
