Description
The ha-ha and non-conformist cemetery located to the south and west of Sweeney Hall date from the mid- to late 18th century. The ha-ha is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with a moulded coping. It features a low wall to the west of Sweeney Hall, which turns at right angles to the east and then south. In the south-west corner, a low stone wall with ornamental wrought-iron railings encloses the non-conformist cemetery. This cemetery contains five recumbent grave slabs; two of these are now illegible. One slab, re-lettered in the late 19th century, bears an inscription for Abigail Chetwood, who died in 1658, while another has a lead inscription plate for Anne Moston, who died in 1651. Additionally, there is a grave commemorating Thomas Baker, who died in 1675. He was the builder of the first Sweeney Hall in 1640 and provided refuge for members of the Congregational Church of Protestant Dissenters.
