Description
The gate piers, walls, and gates located approximately 60 yards north of Hesleyside Hall date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from ashlar stone and wrought iron. In the center, there are iron gates, gate piers, and a fence, flanked by stone piers and screen walls. The square iron gate piers are elaborately designed with scroll motifs and finials that mimic strapwork, and they support gates featuring fleurs-de-lys finials above a half-rail and an intricate scrolled top. The iron fence also includes fleurs-de-lys finials on the half-rail and pyramid finials atop the top rail. The principal standards of the fence are fluted below and twisted above. The square corniced stone flanking piers are topped with urns and are followed by serpentine screen walls that step down from the piers, ending in two lower square piers.
