Description

The Riding Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a bastle house, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It has been extended and altered in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The house features window sashes, doors, and a porch from the 20th century. It is built of random rubble with massive quoins and has a stone slate roof on the bastle section, while the rear extension has a Welsh slate roof. The building has a double-span roof and is two storeys high with three bays. The front two bays on the left represent the original bastle, with end walls that are 4½ feet thick and slightly thinner side walls. The original ground floor entrance is now blocked on the left side but is visible inside the fireplace. There is probably an early 18th-century doorway with rounded jambs in the front wall, along with a blocked upper door directly above it. To the left of the door, there is one later window, and on the first floor, there are two windows. The right bay is slightly recessed and dates from the 18th century. At the rear, there are mainly late 19th-century or 20th-century sashes, but one 16-pane sash remains. The house has gabled roofs with two rebuilt brick gable stacks. Inside, there is a large fireplace from the 17th or early 18th century, featuring an old bressumer.
