Description
This is a milepost located approximately 320 metres south of the Church of Holy Cross in Gilling. It dates from the late 19th century and was made by Mattisons of Bedale. The milepost is constructed from cast iron and has a triangular section with a sloping upper surface. On the left face, it features the inscription "Helmsley 5 miles" beneath a pointing hand, while the right face displays "York 18 miles" also below a pointing hand. The sloping upper face is marked with "-edale H.D.". There is some damage to the top left corner, and the manufacturer's name is found on the rear.
