Description
The war memorial in Gilling East was erected after the First World War and is made of sandstone. It takes the form of an arched entrance to the churchyard of the Parish Church of the Holy Cross, which is also listed at Grade II. The memorial features wide buttressed pillars that support a Tudor arch, topped with a stone slate hipped roof. At the center, there is a stone Fleury cross. The lintel has a raised inscription in Gothic lettering, outlined in gold paint on a red background, which reads: "In Memory of the men of Gilling East, Grimstone/and Cawton who gave their lives in the Great War/1914/1919." Bronze plaques attached to each pillar list the names of the fallen, with seven names on the left and six on the right. This memorial serves as an important historical and cultural symbol of the impact of the Great War on the local community.
