Kiln Building With Attached Cart Shed At Tile Sheds Farm

The kiln building with an attached cart shed at Tile Sheds Farm is likely from the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone, with the tile shed currently serving as a sheep house and the cart shed featuring a 20th-century clay pantile roof. The tile shed is two storeys high and consists of four bays on its west side. It has rough quoins and on the lower level, there are four round-arched openings, each leading to a rubble barrel vault. The second-from-left opening has a smaller round-arched passage in its rear wall that connects to a short cross passage. Above these openings are four blocked openings; the outer ones appear to be pitching doors, and the central ones are small round-arched openings typical for a brick kiln. Above these are four holes that may have been used for beam sockets, possibly for a lean-to roof over the concrete yard outside or for a drying platform. Slit vents are located above these features. On the right return, there is a part-blocked large round-arched opening with ashlar voussoirs that display herringbone tooling and draughted margins, set within corner pilaster buttresses and featuring an impost band. The cart shed on the south side has three segmental-arched openings. The building is situated into the hillside, as clay was extracted from the lower land to the west.
