Description

Kiln Barn at Rothiemay House dates from around 1740 and is a long, two-storey structure with long elevations on the north and south sides. The building is constructed from a mix of pinned and harl pointed rubble, with tooled granite dressings. The front features a central door flanked by vents, while there is an additional door in the rear wall for winnowing. There are four loft windows on both the north and south sides, and the kiln occupies one quarter of the internal space at the west end, with small vents located below the eaves on the north, south, and west sides. The roof is piended and includes a dormered loading door at the east gable. Some alterations were made to the east end in the 19th century to convert the ground floor into a cottage. The building has a ridge stack for the kiln and a later ridge stack for the cottage, and the local slate roof is deteriorating at the southwest.

Inside, there are double-leaf plank doors hinged in the center to control draught for winnowing, along with drawbar holes at each entrance and a mural aumbry near the south door. The circular kiln bowl has two openings into the kiln, one positioned above the other. The original smoke-blackened 'kiln-sticks' have been boarded over to create a floor at the first-floor level. There is a stone mural chute that runs from the kiln floor to the ground floor. The storage loft features wooden shutters on eight windows with cills at floor level, and the roof is made of pegged timber with ashlar and sole plates at the wallhead.
