Description
Avochie House is a small, rectangular tower house dating to the 16th and early 17th centuries. The building is approximately 45 feet by 21 feet, and is now much ruined, with only the east and west gables surviving. It is a single-storey structure with a double attic, built of rubble. A corbelled angle turret is located at the southeast corner, and it is unvaulted. The building's design is comparable to Ballinshoe Castle in Angus, although that structure is shorter, incorporates a basement floor, and lacks an upper attic. References to Avochie House can be found in the New Statistical Account, volume 12, page 1038. It is not referenced in Contributions & Discussions in Architecture or Giles' works.
