Description

The Burial Ground at Rothiemay Parish Church dates back to 1807, with internal remodeling and refitting completed by A and W Reid from Elgin in 1872. The church is rectangular in shape, featuring a front made of pinned dark whinstone and heavily pointed rubble flanks, complemented by contrasting tooled pale grey Avochie granite dressings.

The east gable has a round-headed entrance with a keystone, likely similar to the blocked entrance on the west gable, which has been obstructed by a later vestry. The long south elevation is illuminated by four large, regular round-headed windows, each with keystones and blocked imposts. Smaller gallery windows are found in the east and west gables, each topped with a keystoned oculus. The windows have margined horizontal-pane glazing. At the apex of the west gable is a bellcote with a ball finial at the east. The roof is covered with local slate.

A single-storey vestry is attached to the west gable. There is a blocked first-floor gallery entrance at the rear, beneath which is a re-used and re-set door surround from an earlier church, featuring a curved step that supports a substantial stone font. The doorpiece is moulded and round-headed, with a large keystone adorned with a carved 'winged soul' and detailed carvings at the base of the jambs.

Inside, the church has been remodeled in a traditional layout, with a rectangular pulpit positioned in the center of the south wall and a five-sided gallery that has a panelled and arcaded front. In the entrance porch, there is a fragment of carved stone, possibly a pediment, dated 1672 and featuring a carved star.

The burial ground is enclosed by rubble walls, capped at the east to the roadway with cast-iron railings. It contains tombstones from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a substantial memorial to a former minister who died in 1826 and another to Alexander Duff of Mayen from the early 19th century.
