Description
Burnfield is a large, 2-storey, early 19th century farmhouse built in an L-shape with three bays. The central bay features a prominent pediment and a shouldered stack at its apex. The farmhouse is constructed of roughly squared granite, with granite ashlar dressings, and the granite blocks are pinned together. A timber panelled door is flanked by a rectangular fanlight. Small attic windows are set within the gable ends.
The windows are predominantly fitted with replacement double-glazing within timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered in grey slate, with ashlar skew blocks and skewputts featuring thackstanes to the bases of the chimney stacks. The gable ends have coped stacks topped with tall, octagonal clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.
Inside, a timber staircase has a curving timber handrail, and a round archway leads into the hall.
Burnfield Farmhouse is a good example of a large, early 19th century Aberdeenshire farmhouse, situated on elevated ground overlooking Rothiemay. It demonstrates traditional local building practices, including the use of pinned granite and the distinctive pedimented central bay, and has remained largely unaltered externally. The farmhouse is named on General Roy's military map of 1751, showing a small cluster of buildings, and its L-plan form is depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1856.
The remnants of a simple, U-plan steading, damaged by fire, are located a short distance to the south of the farmhouse.
