Description
Blackhill Folly is a fold yard for cattle, built in the late 18th century to early 19th century. It was likely designed by John Foss of Richmond for the Cradock family of Hartforth Hall. The structure is made of rubble, coursed to the south, with pantile roofs. It consists of single-storey ranges arranged around a courtyard, with a screen wall forming the fourth side.
The screen wall on the south side features three gables connected by plain walls. Each gable slightly projects and is quoined, containing a recessed rendered blind pointed opening flanked by rendered blind loop-holes, and topped with crenellation. The center gable has a tall, wide, blind opening and gabled crenellation with a flat profile. The outer gables have narrow central quoined projections with window-like blind openings and sloping crenellation.
The east and west ranges have access openings towards the north end, along with board doors and slit vents facing the yard. The north range is taller and includes three semicircular arched openings. The west range features king-post roof trusses, while the east range has queen-strut roof trusses.
