Description

East Layton Hall is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of stuccoed rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring artificial stone slate and Westmorland slate roofs. The house is two storeys and three bays by three bays. The east front has an ashlar plinth and chamfered rusticated quoins. A Roman Doric portico with a pediment and triglyphs, metopes, guttae and mutules gives access to a door of six reeded panels, above which sits a basket-arched fanlight with a tripartite keystone. Flanking the portico are eight-pane sash windows in ashlar surrounds, framed by pilasters. To the left of the portico is a segmental bow with tripartite windows, the central section being sash, and topped with a flat lead roof. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars in ashlar surrounds, and there is an eaves band. The north side is hipped and has an artificial stone slate roof. Ashlar corniced stacks are positioned between the first and second bays and at the right end. A single-storey wing extends to the right, featuring a canted bay of French windows and a hipped Westmorland slate roof. The south elevation features an ashlar plinth, quoins, and a first-floor band. It has sash windows in architraves, with 24 panes on the ground floor and 16 panes on the first floor. A similar eaves band is present. The west elevation is three storeys high and has two first-floor windows. The ground floor has a central door of six reeded panels above a three-pane overlight, set within a deep ashlar surround. To the left is a 16-pane sash window, and to the right, a 24-pane sash window, both in ashlar surrounds. The first floor has a 16-pane sash window, and two unequally-hung sash windows with nine panes. A sash window and unequally-hung sash window of nine panes are on the second floor. A brick service range is attached to the left. Internally, there are doors and shutters of reeded panels, moulded and decorative cornices, and an open well staircase with scrolled brackets and stick balusters.
