Description
Belsay Tilery, also known as the old tile kilns, dates from the third quarter of the 19th century. The structure is built from roughly-squared stone with tooled-and-margined quoins, while the south and internal walls are made of brick. The roof is a combination of pantiles and stone slates, featuring brick stacks. There are three adjacent horizontal kilns, and the triple-gabled south elevation displays three blocked round arches, with an arched opening flanked by small blind arches in each blocking wall. The central and left kilns have stacks on their rear gables, and all kilns include three small brick ridge vents. Inside, the kilns have barrel-vaulted ceilings with small segment-headed furnace arches at the rear.
