Description
Norton Gate, which includes gates, gate piers, an adjacent wall, and corner piers, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed from wrought iron and ashlar stone. The central double gates are flanked by square-section piers that stand approximately 4 metres high, with ramped walling connecting to similar end piers. The total length of the walling and gateway is about 30 metres. All the piers feature pulvinated rustication and deep coping, with the gate piers topped by an eagle on the left and a lion on the right, both supporting shields. The corner piers are adorned with ball and cushion finials. The linking walls are around 1.5 metres high, ramped at each end, and have ashlar coping. The gates themselves are approximately 1.5 metres high at the centre and rise to 2 metres high at the piers, featuring alternate long and short standards.
