Description
The Grammar School is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-18th century and 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and roughcast, topped with a Westmorland slate roof and pantiles at the rear. The building has two storeys and five bays. The central entrance features a six-panel door beneath a rectangular three-pane fanlight, framed by a wooden architrave. Above the front door, there is an inscription, likely a 20th-century copy of the original, noting that Peter Samwaies, Rector of Wath, founded a school for boys in 1684. There is a similar door to the left. All windows are 12-pane sashes set in flush wood architraves. The building has ashlar coping and shaped kneelers, with end chimneys and a large external stack on the right side. At the rear, there is a central two-light stone mullion window on the first floor and a single-storey outshut with a Westmorland slate roof. Inside, the roof is supported by four pairs of upper crucks.
