Description

Field Gate Farmhouse dates to 1684, with a later 17th-century extension and 19th and 20th-century alterations. It is built of squared rubble with painted stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The farmhouse is set to the rear of the street.

The front of the house has two storeys and three bays. The central entrance, on the right-hand side, has a moulded surround, a decorated lintel dated and inscribed "A I T F", a gabled slate hood, and a 20th-century door. The windows are all 20th-century casements. On the ground floor, the windows to the left and to the right of centre have chamfered surrounds; these were likely originally three- or four-light windows with mullions, which have since been lost. The window to the right of centre has a hoodmould with a decorated circular stop on the left and a missing stop on the right. A former two-light chamfered window, also on the right-hand ground floor, has a missing mullion. The three upper-floor windows are chamfered and formerly mullioned, but the mullions are now missing. The central former three-light window is flanked by former two-light windows. Gable end stacks are located on the right-hand gable end and on the left of centre of both ridges.

The street front consists of two builds, with a continuous outshut on the left-hand end. A 17th-century entrance on the left-hand side has a chamfered surround and a decorated lintel. To the right of this entrance is a blocked ground-floor window with a decorated head, and above it, an upper-floor window with a trefoil head.
