Description
Close House Cottage is a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, with origins in the 17th century and alterations made in the late 19th to early 20th century. The building is rendered with stone dressings and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has four bays. The entrance is located to the right of the centre and features a heightened 17th-century surround with a decorated lintel inscribed with "E R F 1676" (for Richard and Elizabeth Frankland). The door is a six-panel design with a rectangular fanlight above.
The extreme left-hand bay does not have any windows. On the ground floor, there are two windows with plain surrounds, featuring 20-pane sashes. The three upper floor windows also have plain surrounds and have all been heightened; the central light has sashes, while the outer lights have 16-pane sashes. There are three dormer windows that date from around 1900.
Inside, the front right-hand room includes a 19th-century inglenook fireplace with a moulded surround and a basket arch made of 19 voussoirs, along with a beehive oven to the left.
