Description

Giggleswick School Chapel is a school chapel built between 1897 and 1901 by architect T G Jackson. It features Gothic styling and is constructed from banded rockfaced millstone grit sandstone and limestone, topped with a copper hipped roof over the nave and a copper-covered terracotta dome over the chancel. The aisles are made of Elterwater slate. The chapel has a Latin cross plan, with a west entrance porch, a three-bay nave, a one-bay chancel, and narrow side aisles. The west entrance leads to a narthex with a five-bay design and a lean-to slate roof. The central entrance has a four-centre head, plank doors with strap hinges, and four round-headed chamfered windows set within shallow segmental arched arcades. A rose window with cusped lights is also present. The chapel features set-back buttresses, and the right-hand entrance on the south side has a lintel dated 1897 and a plank door. The aisles have three small round-headed lights, while the clerestory has three 3-light Perpendicular windows with four-centre heads and hoodmoulds, supported by a corbel table.

The square chancel is defined by octagonal turrets at each corner, which have louvred bell stages and sandstone caps. The south window has five lights in a Decorated style, while the east window has seven lights, and there are two 2-light round-headed windows on the north side. Inside, the chapel features Italian sgrafitto work throughout, an inlaid marble floor in the nave, and bronze statues of Edward VI and Queen Victoria by G Frampton in niches above the nave entrance. The west window has stained glass designed by Jackson. The pews, choir stalls, and pulpit are made of Argentine cedar. There is a round-headed arcade leading to the aisles with foliated capitals, and the barrel-vaulted roof is supported by King post trusses. The chancel contains stained glass by Burlison and Grylls, with tesserae in the dome and pendentives, and an octagonal lantern above the dome.
