Description
The Science Block and Lecture Room at Giggleswick School is a building constructed around 1876 and 1900 by the architectural firm Austin and Paley. It features dressed, snecked stone and a Westmorland slate roof. The earlier block from 1876 is single-storey and has a tripartite composition. The entrance is marked by a projecting gabled porch located to the left of the center, which has a Tudor arch above the entrance, flanked by lights, transoms, and two lights above a plank door. There is a chamfered light in the gable. To the left of the entrance, there are three mullioned and transomed windows, and the hipped roof has a louvred vent. On the right side, there are five smaller mullioned and transomed windows with hood moulds, and a tall ridge stack is positioned to the right of the entrance.
The right-hand block, built around 1900, is three storeys tall and features a tower with two storeys and three bays to the right. The tower has a four-light mullioned window on the ground floor and a three-light mullioned window on the first floor. The second floor includes a trefoil-headed light with a hood mould and a parapet. The ground floor has a three-bay arcade with segmental arches to the right. On the upper floor, there is a tall gabled three-light window with mullions and two transoms, flanked by three-light mullioned windows on both sides. The building is topped with a tall hipped roof and is included for its group value.
