Description

This is a late 19th-century school classroom block, built between 1879 and 1889 by Austin & Paley, with a 20th-century addition. It is located on Station Road, Sedbergh, adjacent to Powell Hall and the War Memorial Cloister. It is an example of Tudor Revival architecture and is listed for its group value, contributing to the character of the area.

The building has a wide, irregular H-plan, incorporating a main east-west range with shorter crosswings at each end. It is constructed of snecked sandstone with a graduated green slate roof. The exterior features a chamfered plinth, weathered string course, and a parapet with ridged coping. The western crosswing, with an integral porch in the re-entrant angle, has two unequal gables. The porch features a shallow, full-height canted bay with a depressed arched doorway, a moulded surround, carved Perpendicular-style ornament above the doorhead, and a large triple cross-window on the first floor. The west wing's gable displays a pair of cross-windows at ground floor, a transomed six-light window above, a lancet window in the gable, ridged coping with kneelers, and an apex finial. The main range features transomed six-light windows at ground floor, mullioned windows on the first floor, and three gabled dormers behind a parapet. A two-story, flat-roofed addition in matching style is situated in the re-entrant angle of the eastern crosswing. The gable wall of the eastern wing features a pair of cross-windows at ground floor, a carved shield above the string course, a three-stage transomed nine-light window on the first floor with a hoodmould, and gable detailing similar to the western wing. Most of the transomed windows have arched upper lights with hollow spandrels, however, they now largely have square-headed, aluminium-framed double-glazing, with the exception of those in the addition. An octagonal ridge chimney is positioned to the right. East and west side walls are also in a similar style with gables, and the rear elevation includes three tall nine-light transomed windows at first floor height which rise into gables. The interior has not been inspected.
