Description
Palmers Hill is a row of six almshouses, now remodelled into three units, dated 1848 according to a plaque in the centre. The building features pale sandstone and blue ragstone arranged in alternating courses of rock-faced masonry, with punch-dressed sandstone quoins, and has a graduated blue slate roof. It has a long rectangular double-depth plan, originally one unit for each pair but now integrated. The design is in a simplified Jacobean style.
The structure is single storey with nine windows. The original arrangement had windows and doorways alternating, with the window positioned to the left of each doorway. However, the second, fourth, and sixth doorways have been changed into matching windows. All openings feature dressed lintels with cavetto hoodmoulds. The three remaining doorways are square-headed, equipped with studded doors that have strap-hinges and plain overlights, while all windows are cross-window casements. To the left of the window of No. 3, there is a rectangular plaque that reads "WIDOWS HOSPITAL / BUILT BY / T.PALMER / AD 1848". The roof has oversailing eaves and verges, with gable chimneys and two ridge chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
