Description
The Jubilee Drinking Fountain, built into the churchyard wall, is a drinking fountain with side-benches that was erected in 1897 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria, coinciding with the widening of Finkle Street. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a black marble plaque and a brass cup. The fountain is designed in a classical style, resembling a pedimented aedicule, with console-footed fluted pilasters framing a recessed center. Above the left pilaster is a pulvinated frieze inscribed "1837," with "QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE" in the center and "1897" above the right-hand pilaster. The center includes a convex bowl with a drinking cup attached by a chain, along with a small black marble plaque that bears an inscription detailing the cause and occasion of its erection.
The pediment is adorned with relief sculpture depicting "THE WOMAN OF SAMARIA AND OUR SAVIOUR AT THE WELL," which is currently protected by a perspex screen. Integral stone side-benches are located on either side of the fountain. This structure forms a group with the nearby Church of St Andrew.
