Description
This is a small house located on Back Lane in Sedbergh. It likely dates from the later 17th century, but was significantly altered in the 19th century. The house is constructed of painted stucco over a rubble base, with painted quoins. It has a stone slate roof and rendered chimneys. The design follows a single-depth, two-unit plan.
The exterior features two low storeys and three windows. A plinth and rusticated quoins are visible on the left corner. The ground floor has a doorway offset to the right, featuring a moulded surround and a recessed 19th-century part-glazed door. To the left of the door is a two-light window with six-pane horned sashes, and to the right a square one-light window with six-pane hornless sashes. Both ground floor windows have deep reveals and moulded surrounds. The first floor has three six-pane hornless sashes with raised sills and plain reveals. Two small wrought-iron brackets for former hanging signs are positioned on either side of the doorway at first floor level. The roof has a large chimney stack at the left gable, and a corbelled square chimney stack with a tall cylindrical shaft at the front right-hand corner. A later inserted oblong window is present on the ground floor of the left gable wall. The rear of the property and its interior have not been inspected. The house forms a group with The Old Grammar School opposite.
