Description
Colwyn Bay County Primary School is a mainly single-storey building constructed from grey snecked stone with yellow stone dressings and slate roofs. The chimneys feature upper courses in brick. The long elevation facing the road includes paired gables on the left. To the left of these gables, there is a large mullion and transom window with seven lights in total. To the right, the upper level has a three-light window, while the lower level features a four-light window. Further to the right, the roof sweeps down over a five-window block with a buttressed central gabled bay that contains a three-light mullion and transom window, flanked by two-light and three-light windows. A Gothic doorway on the left features a boarded door with elaborate strap hinges. At the ridge of the roof, there is a ventilator and an open belcote topped with a steep pyramidal roof and weathervane. The large gabled bay has another large mullion and transom window with seven lights, followed by a block of five windows. The second and fourth bays have buttressed gables with three-light mullion and transom windows, while the others have three-light mullion windows. The right return features a large gable with a five-light window, a smaller gable with a four-light window, and a two-light window in between. A low stone boundary wall runs along the front.
The rear of the building is designed in a similar style, featuring a pair of gables at the west end and a large cross wing with two gables on the west side. There is a flat-roofed block between this and a smaller gabled block that has stepped mullion and transom windows, along with another flat-roofed block with mullion and transom windows.
Inside, the school retains its overall plan and character remarkably well. It includes large classrooms and an assembly hall. The original open roofs are preserved above recent suspended ceilings, with corbels and the feet of trusses visible. There are wooden stairs leading to offices on the upper floor at the east end.
