Description

The Edward Richard Old Grammar School is a single-storey school building constructed from stone, featuring unpainted render on the front and left side, and a slate roof. It has rendered end chimneys, with the left one being small. On the right side, there are three large Gothic windows, which have earlier 20th-century small-pane glazing over paired square casements, and a plinth course below. The left end wall has two horned sash windows, while the right end displays exposed rubble stone.

At the rear, there is a later parallel block built from matching stone. To the front left, there is a lower early 20th-century rendered library block that projects and has a hipped slate roof. This block is divided into three bays by raised wall-piers: the front (east) has two horned 8-pane sash windows, while the third bay is obscured by a porch. The rear (west) side has three sash windows. There is a flat-roofed rendered porch at the angle, which features a panelled door at the front and a horned sash window on the right side.

Inside, the large schoolroom has a boarded ceiling and two high blocked windows in the rear wall, along with a doorway that has deep splays and a boarded dado. To the left, there is an early 19th-century wooden stair leading to a gallery and a former sleeping room, which has two later windows added to the rear. Adjacent to the stair, in the rear wall, there is a blocked Gothic window with a small modern window opening.
