Description
Wren’s Nest is a Neo-Georgian style house built of buff brick with a red tile roof and axial stacks. The house dates to the late 18th or early 19th century. The front façade has two storeys and a three-window range, with a central entrance recessed behind an iron railing with an interlaced circle motif. The recessed area features lattice work "pilasters" and a valence, and is accessed by French doors with small panes of glass. The ground floor windows are tall, paired 12-pane sashes with straight brick heads and sills. The upper windows are shorter, paired 12-pane sashes with a central mullion. Similar windows are found in the east gable return. The return elevation to Alexandra Road has a large canted bay window on the ground floor, with a tripartite window above. A service wing extends to the rear, featuring paired 8-pane sash windows on the west side, and a tall staircase facing east. A sill band formed from bricks laid alternately flat and vertically runs along the first floor windows. A reeded wood eaves cornice finishes the building.
The interior is simply detailed but retains many original fittings. The house is compactly planned around a wide central hall, from which the two principal rooms open. The staircase is offset to the rear, and the kitchen, scullery, and other service areas are located in the rear wing.
