Description

Hunt House at Rydal School is a building constructed from coursed and squared rusticated rubble, topped with a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and features a four-window range facing north into the courtyard. To the right, there is an advanced gable with the entrance beside it, located to the right of centre within a gabled porch that has a segmentally arched doorway. Above the porch is a mullioned and transomed stair window, which creates a grid pattern with blind panels between the windows, displaying the letters R S and a shield in low relief. The gable includes a two-storeyed canted bay window, with a tripartite window in the attic. On the left of the entrance, there are paired windows on each floor, and triple windows in the gable dormer above. Each floor in the left-hand bay has a single window. All windows feature flat chamfered lintels with hood-moulds, and there are relieving arches above the first-floor windows. The return elevation facing Pwllycrochan Avenue exhibits similar detailing, including a full-height canted bay window in the wide upper gable. The long rear elevation has windows arranged in a 2-3-2 grouping, reflecting the layout of classrooms and the original bedrooms inside.

The original internal layout remains almost intact, along with the original staircase, which is notable for its ornate arcading on the hall and landing.
