Description

Westbourne is a two-storey and attic building that forms a reflected pair, showcasing an unusually vibrant High Victorian style with detailed tiled work. The symmetrical front features four bays, with the outer bays advanced and splayed, topped by very steep hipped cross roofs. The slate roof is decorated with fishscale tiling, cresting, and stock brick chimney stacks adorned with red brick panels. There are two French-style dormer windows at the front, each featuring ironwork volutes and gable ornaments.

The main façade is entirely covered in glazed bricks of various colors, predominantly purple, and is rich in classical and other decorative details at the cornice, entablature, lintel, cill, and plinth levels. Above the first-floor windows, there is a band of fleuron panels, and cross-patterned panelling is found between the first and ground floors on the bay windows. The quoins are made of deeply embossed stellar patterns in cream-colored terracotta, giving a toothed edge appearance. The windows are horned sash types, with the first-floor windows featuring pedimented lintels and cream-colored dressings on the central windows, along with pilasters on the bay windows.

The cast iron trellised porch has twin entrances and Rococo spandrel details, along with a high balustrade. The round-arched doorways include keystones and cream-colored dressings, with four-panel doors and frosted glass fanlights.

On the left side, the building has a tile-hung section with a 2 + 2 window arrangement, featuring fishscale banding, pedimented lintels, and a splayed bay window, with a cross range stepped back beyond. The right side is made of Ruabon brick and has a similar window arrangement but with more lavish detailing, including very ornate bargeboards. The rear gable end has two windows, and there is a low outbuilding in the center.

The interior of Westbourne retains considerable original detail, similar to that of Bryn Derwen, which is said to be unaltered. The inner porch features brightly colored wall tiling that continues up to dado height in the hall and along the staircase, with similar fireplaces throughout. The turned newel and unusual handrail have undulating edges, and brass knockers are present on the panelled doors.
