Description
Brynderwen is a symmetrical four-bay building dating from the 19th century. It features advanced and splayed outer bays topped with very steep hipped cross roofs. The slate roof is adorned with fishscale tiling, cresting, and stock brick chimney stacks that have red brick panels. The front has two French-style dormer windows with ironwork volutes and gable ornaments. The main façade is entirely faced in glazed bricks of various colors, predominantly purple, and is richly detailed with classical elements at the cornice, entablature, lintel, cill, and plinth levels. There are bands of fleuron panels above the first-floor windows and cross-patterned panelling between the first and ground floors on the bay windows. The quoins feature deeply embossed stellar patterns in cream-colored terracotta, creating a toothed edge.
The building has horned sash windows, with the first-floor windows having pedimented lintels and cream-colored dressings on the central windows, along with pilasters on the bay windows. A cast iron trellised porch with twin entrances and Rococo spandrel detail leads to round arched doorways that have keystones and cream-colored dressings, with four-panel doors and frosted glass fanlights.
On the left side, the building has a tile-hung two plus two window arrangement with fishscale banding, pedimented lintels, and a splayed bay window, while a cross range steps back beyond. The right side is constructed of Ruabon brick and features a similar window arrangement but with more lavish detailing, including very ornate bargeboards. The rear gable end has two windows and a low outbuilding at the center.
Inside, Brynderwen retains considerable original detail, and Woodbourne is said to be similarly unaltered. The inner porch has brightly colored wall tiling that continues up to dado height in the hall and up the staircase, along with similar fireplaces. The turned newel and unusual handrail have undulating edges, and brass knockers adorn the panelled doors.
